Apple today released on ResearchKit, its open-source platform that allows hospitals and health research to develop clinical trials open to users of the iPhone in the US, and since this summer in Britain and Hong Kong. New research has been launched on autism, epilepsy and melanoma. The first study on autism, Autism & Beyond was developed by Duke University and Duke Medicine. The application will benefit from the FaceTime camera of the iPhone to try to detect signs of developmental problems from an early age. The second study on epilepsy was developed by Johns Hopkins and operates the Apple Watch, a first. This is to determine whether the connected sensors can report shows the onset of a crisis and to measure the duration. A complication was designed for this purpose to allow the patient to not only alert near the onset of a crisis, but also to capture the "digital signature". Finally, Oregon Health & Science University studied melanoma via photos taken by an iPhone, which could be used to learn more about the development of moles and the risk of melanoma. This will be used to better document the changing moles and transmit them directly to healthcare professionals.
