Overcast 2 available on the App Store and this excellent podcasts player adds a feature that was missing since launch: streaming. We can now read an episode immediately without having to download it first completely.
By default, Overcast continue to download new episodes, only Wi-Fi. In the application preferences, you can still activate in cell loading, or switch to streaming only. In this case, the episodes are never downloaded unless you choose to do it manually. Playback begins however when you read an episode, whether or not charged locally. And if you read a streaming episode, it will be fully charged if the network is fast enough and then Overcast retain the file locally.
Streaming two purposes: firstly, start playing any episode, without waiting for full download. On the other hand, saving the space occupied on a unit never downloading episodes locally. In this case, you need an internet connection to play an episode, it makes sense. If you want to completely block the use of the cellular network, it must pass through the iOS settings.
Overcast 2.0 also integrates a dedicated screen space used by the episodes. One can thus find out which podcasts occupy the most space on the device and delete all episodes of a particular podcast. Where appropriate, the episodes are available, but streaming.
This is not the only novelty, however. For iPhone 6s, there are Quick Actions from the Home screen to quickly start playback of podcasts recently listened and during playback, to pause or recommend the current episode. Furthermore, the chapters are properly cared for podcasts that support them.
Finally, the sound effects were improved with this update. "Smart Speed", which automatically removes the white, works best with voice a little weak. "Voice Boost", which improves the volume to highlight the voices, has also been revised and it is better. One could also mention an option to read the priority podcasts rather than the latest in smart playlists of Overcast.
